One Day in Detroit: DAOs, Spaghetti and a Pirate AR Bubiko exhibition

I was invited by Artizen to attend MCONIII, a collection of events  all connected to some aspect of  DAOs. What is a DAO? From Google:

DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization, which is a type of digital management structure that uses blockchain technology and smart contracts to govern itself.

As far as I can tell, no DAO is connected with any aspect of AR. But, if we define the metaverse as ultimately being a union of AR, VR, AI and crypto, it seems likely that DAOs and blockchain will eventually have an AR component. Or, perhaps more accurately, AR will eventually incorporate some form of DAO/blockchain.

I am not a member of any DAOs, nor did I have any knowledge or experience related to them. But, I have known René Pinnel*, the founder of Artizen, for years.*Artizen is something like a DAO, one set up to fund art projects. Artizen was one of the sponsors of MCONIII.

Way back when… I was in Singapore, and had just finished a 360 video (at the time others mistakenly called this format “VR”). I discovered the Los Angeles VR Festival. I knew I was a few days past the deadline to enter, but tried anyway. René was kind enough to explain that I was too late, but that he liked my film.

But back to DAOs…For a full day I immersed myself in the world of DAOs.

In the snake tee shirt is Tracheopteryx. Bubiko NFTs are behind him.The funeral bearers of the Chili DAO, then a flyer describing the importance of community, then a graph. There were many graphs

Tracheopteryx is one of the central figures in the decentralized DAO world. If one wants to become knowlegebale about DAOS, this link by Tracheopteryx is a solid start. However, one slide in his Powerpoint says it all:

How do we share resources without killing each other?

That’s it in a nutshell. DAOs exist to create groups of people who use blockchain to create new possibilities about governing resources, ideas and finance.

There were many discussions about ‘trust’, and how large groups of people can create authority and accountability. It was a day full of charts and a sense that something big and positive was being defined.

The venue was Jam Handy, who fortunately have kept one of the ads from when the building was a film studio.

Across the street from Jam Handy is Chroma. Here I set up a pirate exhibition of Bubiko images.

The evening began in a house, in an AirBnB full of Artizen artists. They were from Detroit, Toronto, Peru, Denmark and beyond. I was so lucky to eat spaghetti made by these AR artists:

Watching a presentation by Future Nativo. Amazing+ Inspirational
