Building in progress: glassity

Some startups  “build in public”.

Artists show ”work in progress”.

“Making it up as we go along.”

These concepts are the basis for this post about Glassity, a project which will open to the public in September.

Glassity: an art exhibition by Korey Sherer and Stephen Black, with workshops.

September 26th is Ohio Tech Day. On a recent Zoom hosted by Keith Instone (https://dexterityux.com), the benefits of  OTD were made clear, especially in regards to connecting the next generation to tech. After the Zoom, I started thinking of doing a workshop or presentation on Augmented Reality/Spatial Computing.

I have done these in classrooms in Singapore, and at places like Hong Kong PolyU, New York Tech Week, Columbia University, VRTO, the VIEW Conference and MIT.  But where in Ohio could I set this up?

Bent Neon, in Toledo, Ohio.

Bent Neon is the studio run by Kory Sherer, an artist working with neon and glass. One of Kory’s pieces is a Jeep made of neon. It exists in 3D space, it’s not a flat artwork meant to be hung on a wall.

Because of my work with 3D digital objects and spatial computing, I felt a connection with Kory’s neon Jeep.

2D: no, 3D: yes.

On a conceptual level, things are also interesting. Jeeps are tough machines that have been made in Toledo factories since 1941. Korey: an individual, an artist working with a fragile medium, each piece unique.

Heavy Jeeps, neon glass, and the futuristic, invisible content of AR.

GLASS + augmented realITY
